Lent, Day 38: The Love of a Friend

I feel like I'm running out of things to talk about... Maybe it's just me having to get used to updating on a daily basis. Either way... I've been reading "The Four Loves" and it has reminded me of how much I enjoy reading C.S. Lewis. He really was a brilliant man. So today I will leave you with some of his quotes on love and friendship that will hopefully make you think.

“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.” - from The Four Loves

“Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: 'What! You too? I thought I was the only one.'”

“Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art.... It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things which give value to survival.” - from The Four Loves

“Love is not affectionate feeling, but a steady wish for the loved person's ultimate good as far as it can be obtained.”

“Love is something more stern and splendid than mere kindness.”
